Well kids its that time again, time for some spies, nukes, and crazy anime villains. That's right Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is out. I've completed the first portion of the game so I felt qualified to share my impressions.
1)This game is hardcore. The story takes place in the 1960's (I can only assume that the 'Snake' you play as is actually Big Boss, Solid Snake's papa). Well back in the 60's they apparently didn't have the fancy radar and nanos that Solid Snake and his buddies have in good ole' year 2000. This means you have to actually watch your environment, and treat your wounds. I realized how hardcore the game was when I had to actually listen to see if the sound of a soldier's footsteps was fading or rising in order to figure out which direction he was facing, to get by him without being caught. Now, if you've complained that the MGS series isn't really stealthy compared to say Tenchu, or my personal favorite the Thief series, you can now have the ultimate crazy stealth survival experience.
2)That food thing. Another major feature of MGS 3 is the food system. You have to eat in order to keep your stamina up. Now, in the time frame the game takes place in it isn't incredibly realistic for Snake to get hungry that fast, but if you turn on your suspension of disbelief it actually is fairly cool and nifty. I've been told by people further along in the game that running out of food becomes a major problem later in the game.
3)Story stuff. Same old long radio conversations. If you didn't like it in the first two MGS's you still won't. I've already met Ocelot. But he isn't the Revolver Ocelot we all know and love. He's just Ocelot, doesn't use a Revolver, and screwed up in order to show off fancy moves. It's just cool seeing a guy who will be an incredible badass as a young cocky kid making mistakes. He even complains to his commander about killing fellow Russians. I guess he hasn't sold his soul yet. Other characters include some guy who controls thousands of hornets by will who styles himself as "The Pain", and some crazy Russian colonel who can control lightning. I remember the days when Vulcan Raven was crazy supernatural. Ah the naivete of youth.
Will share more as I get further in the game.

Yeah I hear you have to eat bugs in the game as well to keep up that food system. Well, they are full of protein!
I can't wait to see it, but I'm waiting for the insurance to get back to me so I can get Sol a new PS2 so we can play games again... *sigh*

Sounds quite interesting. I'll have to check it out when I get the chance. My last foray into MGS was playing Substance and making Snake skateboard right off the edge of the rig. Weeeee!
I think I had more fun with the digital camera than anything else. I had filled a guy's face up with darts until he looked like Pinhead from those horror movies. To my surprise, he still woke up...with the pins stuck to his face. So of course, I did it again after they fell off so I'd have a picture of it, hehehe.
It's one of my favorite games, but man did I play around more than following the storyline, lol.
